my teeth fell out while i slept,
and my mouth felt lonely, so
in the morning, i planted
seeds in their holes
and waited for flowers
to grow, but only branches,
short and pointed bloomed,
poking into the soft flesh
of my mouth, staining
themselves a deep red

i tried to tell my dentist
what i had done, but
only the whistling whispers
of leaves in the breeze
came out, and he stared at me
till i realized my body had
hardened into bark
and he was actually
just a tree in the mirror
who couldn’t see me
